A new report, from leading industry specialists, Rigby Research, makes some searching observations about the health of the PVC-U rainwater marketplace. The PVC-U Rainwater Market Report for the UK and Ireland reveals that the leading four manufacturers accounted for almost two thirds of the market, with several companies sharing the remaining one third between them. Total PVC market volume had grown by 7.8% since their last report (2002) but prices lagged some way behind, increasing by just 1.8% – which represented a fall in real terms, after allowing for inflation.

“The ability to command higher prices is inextricably linked to the channel of distribution”, said Neil Parsonson, Market Research Manager of Rigby Research. “Retail outlets offered the best return – but the leading DIY outlets’ attempts to woo small builders to their trade counters have shown little success. Most of the volume growth reached the market via plastics distributors rather than the traditional merchants route – but the lower price achieved at distributors was a major reason why sales values grew more slowly”.

The detailed report was compiled from interviews and desk research with senior industry figures – combined with extracts from annual reports, government data and other published and unpublished marketplace statistics. The authors cross-checked their information using multiple sources where possible and, as a result, believe it to be the most accurate, comprehensive and informative study ever produced on the PVC rainwater marketplace.

One area of particular growth area they identified was supplying conservatory manufacturers. Although conservatories only account for a small proportion of the PVC rainwater market, their share has doubled since 2002 and, because of the higher ratio of moulded fittings required, the value of conservatory rainwater sales makes it an attractive proposition. It’s a market that most rainwater companies are not supplying and is currently dominated by one manufacturer.

The report includes a detailed summary about each of the main rainwater manufacturers – outlining significant changes that have taken place since their previous rainwater report – and including tables illustrating that whereas some manufacturers were able to more than double their throughput over the preceding four years, others remained static, or saw volumes decline.

The depth and breadth of information, including market share, costs, sales, margins, turnover per employee, profitability, ROI and product differentiation will enable Sales Directors and Finance Directors to produce more accurate business plans – whilst the market forecasts to 2009 will help support capital investment decisions.

The 80-page PVC-U Rainwater Market Report for the UK and Ireland, including 32 tables and 14 charts, costs £1,850 plus VAT and is available now.
